Jubilee Service

In June 2002 Badsey Church held a service of Thanksgiving, Intercession and Commitment to mark the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.

The sun shone for the service held in the school playground. We went dressed in red, white and blue and had flags to wave.

Representatives from village organisations, offered symbols used at the coronation service, a bible, oil and spoon, a bowl and towel and a basket of vegetables as a symbol of our community. They also read an excerpt from The Queen's Millennium Christmas Broadcast and led the intercessions, which were based on the symbols.

The bible as a sign of wisdom, oil to symbolise God's call to commitment and faithfulness, the towel and bowl as a symbol of service and the basket of vegetables to show that we recognise the joys and challenges of living alongside each other.

We sang traditional and modern hymns. At the end we committed ourselves afresh to serve our local community, nation and world.

The service, which had been put together by the Churches together in Britain and Ireland was used throughout the United Kingdom.
